Rudy Gutierrez Original Mixed Media Painting ” Emmitt Smith ‘Hall of Famer’ “
Rudy’s work has been used for various periodicals, book covers, magazines, records, CDs, and children’s books. His paintings have appeared nationally and abroad and his work has been published by Sony, Harper Collins, Rolling Stone Magazine, Verve Records, Arista Records, Ms. Magazine, The NY Times, Scholastic, Viking/Penguin, Playboy, Pepsi, and People Magazine. Rudy was commissioned for the much anticipated Santana “Shaman” CD cover. The work has been seen worldwide, including as a back drop at the 2002 Super Bowl and a full street window display for the New York Macy’s store. It was also used by ANSA (Artists for A New South Africa) for fund raising in their fight against Aids.
Rudy’s honors include the Dean Cornwell Recognition Award, Distinguished Educator in the Arts Award, and a Gold Medal from the NY Society of Illustrators, and his work has been featured by Communication Arts, Step by Step Magazine, Society of Illustrators Annuals, Society of Publication Designers and Art Direction Magazine, and others.
His art has been described as “Wall Medicine”, ancient yet contemporary, urban in sense and musical in feel. Rudy believes that the highest honor and fulfillment is to inspire others to reach into their spirits to do whatever they do best. He has performed with “Def Dance Jam Workshop” doing live “painting performances”, and has also created backdrops, stage props and workshops for the dance troupe, which features hearing impaired and physically challenged kids. He has also performed with “Dance, Music, and Kids” on stage with performers of “The Lion King” and “Bring in the Noise, Bring in the Funk” among others.
Rudy contributed art to the First Annual Anti-Apartheid show at the United Nations, participated in a touring group show of Germany exploring social issues, donated art to the International Cultures Foundation, exhibited at the World Conference Against Racism in Durban, South Africa, and contributed as well as Co-Curated “The Prevailing Human Spirit” exhibition at the Society of Illustrators in NY. The show was a benefit for the victims of the tragic events of 9/11.
