1935 Bacon & Day B & D Banjo Tenor 4 String 1935

I am pleased to offer this Bacon & Day Silver Bell Special XX, Roy Smeck Stage Model 4 String Tenor Banjo. Serial # is 24581 dating this banjo to 1935.
To describe this banjo as ornate would be simply understating it’s beauty.
– The neck is made from solid Brazilian Rosewood
– Mute and armrest are engraved
– The fretboard is gold glitter encrusted and intricately wood carved,
– The tuning pegs are adorned with mother of pearl,
The arm guard is noted “B & D Special XX which indicates 2 common options were removed to make this banjo more affordable during the depression days. I’m told that the two options removed include:
– Ornate woodwork design on the back (this has a plan wood back)
– Gold tone wash instead of gold plating
This banjo includes a knee mute bar (B & D soft pedal).
Banjo comes with a non original case.
This is a super rare find and highly collectable instrument that plays and sounds great. Any serious banjo player would be thrilled and honored to own and display this beauty. It is in original and unrestored condition with a wonderful patina that only 77 years of playing can provide. Fretboard is in very good condition, neck is straight and banjo plays beautifully.
Please feel free to ask any questions and I will get them answered promptly.

Ownership history:
I purchased it in 1952, played it a lot during my dixieland band days (’52-’60), but for the past 50 years or so it hasn’t seen much action – I occasionally just tuned it up to match and played along with some old records for my own enjoyment. Being in my late 70’s, it’s time for someone else to enjoy this wonderful instrument.
