Ferrari Daytona Spyder Replica by McBurnie
Offered today is a Ferrari Daytona Spyder Replica made by McBurnie Coachcraft. This car is based on a 1969 Corvette. VIN # is 194679S718799.
This is not a kit car but a turnkey fully assembled car manufactured by McBurnie Coachworks. This car started life as a 1969 Corvette and then was modified by McBurnie to be the beauty that it is today. Many of the Daytona replicas tend to have Corvette type interiors which really ruins the affect for most people. This car features a true Daytona style interior that just oozes Ferrari.
McBurnie is well known as the man who built the black Daytona Spyder for the TV show Miami Vice. He is widely recognized as one of the best and is still in business today although no longer producing Daytona Spyder replicas (thanks to the Ferrari Lawyers).
According to my research, McBurnie only produced a few dozen of the Daytona Spyder replicas before Ferrari shut his production line down. These are quite rare.
Obviously, while the Ferrari purists will turn their nose up at this offering, it truly offers a lot of bang for your exotic car buck. The owner notes that he gets stares every time he drives this car.
While we’d all like to own a real Daytona Spyder or even a real Daytona Coupe, for most of us mere mortals, that dream is simply beyond our means. For the price to play here, you can get one heck of a fun drive and people will definitely stare. With only 127 REAL Daytona Spyders produced, the odds of even seeing a real one let along owning a real one are very remote.
Mileage on this car is only 15,000 +/- miles – owner believes mileage to be correct (cannot be confirmed). The car is titled in South Carolina as 1969 Chevrolet Corvette.
The car features:
– 4 speed – no automatics here
– Chevy small block L46 350 cubic inch motor
– 4 wheel disc brakes
– Clarion in-dash CD player
– Top is in excellent shape
– Very nice paint – not perfect but very nice
– Leather interior
– Daytona style seats with black inserts
|Miami Vice according to Tom McBurnie|
I worked for a company in Newport Beach called Trend Imports. I used to paint and customize Ferraris there. I suggested that we do a replica Ferrari. At first I wanted to use a Camaro chassis, but we needed the independent suspension of the Corvette. I started in 1980, and it took one year to get everything fitted and ready to build. The first four California Daytona Spyders went to the owner of Trend Imports. The first and the fourth are the ones used on the show.
[Miami Vice transportation coordinator] Ben Haggerty used to hang out at Trend Imports, and he was the one who recommended to [director and show creator] Michael Mann that he use the Ferrari Daytona Spyder. They leased one for the pilot and then purchased it and another for the second season. One was a ’76, and the other an ’81.
– A rare and well built Daytona Spyder replica by McBurnie
– Based on a solid low mileage Corvette
– Imagine going out to dinner in this thing – you will definitely get one of those special parking spots in the front
Vehicle Condition – – I have not personally inspected or photographed this vehicle. I am relying on the pictures and descriptions provided by the seller. I can however tell that this Daytona Spyder replica is very cool and so reasonably priced.
The car here is certainly not being represented as a show car but as a very good driver quality car. While the fit and finish is quite good, there is some space where the hood meets the windshield and some scratches and nicks noted.
I invite and encourage any interested party to inspect this car in the Fayetteville, NC. area and determine for yourself that this car is in excellent condition. Seeing is really believing.
