1986 Porsche Factory Turbo Look Cabriolet - My Personal Car 38K Miles

Offered today is a rare 1986 Porsche Factory Turbo Look Cabriolet (option M-491). This car is not just any factory turbo look cab but my personal car. Many of you in Ebay-land follow my auctions and know that I represent sellers of fine exotic and muscle cars. In this case, I am representing myself and offering my personal car for sale. I have been a Porsche Club member for over 20 years and this is the third Porsche that I have owned. VIN # is WP0EB0914GS170324.

This car is only 1 of 8 factory TL Cabriolets imported to the US in 1986. It is Grand Prix White (original color and believed to be original paint) with full black leather interior with black top and black boot cover. Although there are some Euro details on the car such as amber rear lenses and rear fog light, the car is a 100% guaranteed US car.

It comes with full service records going back to 1992 as well as the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity (see picture below). It is fully serviced and has been expertly maintained. Never smoked in or driven in snow, always garaged and babied. This is an absolutely rust free gorgeous high performance 911 cab. In addition, the garage floor under the car is always bone dry - no oil leaks.

Yokohama tires were purchased in 2002 and only have 4500 miles on them. Needless to say, tons of tread and tire life left.

The Porsche "Turbo Look" - A Brief History - by Paul Cadrobbi

These special cars contain many performance upgrades gained through years of international competition. Beginning in October 1972 the first prototypes, based on the legendary RS 2.7 Carrera, were “wide-bodied” 2.8 RSR Carreras developed specifically for Group 3 and 4 road racing. These track-dominating 911s were known within Porsche AG as Manufacturing Option “491". One notable chassis improvement was a carefully calculated relocation of rear suspension mounting points. This change was key to keeping newly developed 11-inch rear wheels and tires firmly planted on the road. Stopping power was vastly improved by using drilled and vented rotors with finned 4-piston calipers developed specifically for the all-conquering 917. Forced to compete in Group 5 as a factory prototype with an early 2.8 RSR in 1973, Peter Gregg/Hurley Haywood claimed outright wins in the 24 Hours of Daytona and 12 Hours of Sebring! Next to carry the M491 option was the limited-production 1974 RS 3.0, which included the first IROC Series cars. RSRs earned Porsche the ISMA Driver’s Championship and the Manufacture’s Championship, totally dominating production-based GT racing for more than a decade. Every 930 Turbo carried Option M491 thru 1989. During the late seventies, Porsche quietly began offering this same racing-based M491 option as normally aspirated “Turbo Look” street cars; most being produced between the years of 1984 thru 1989.

The Ultimate Dual Purchase Car


In my opinion, this is the ultimate "dual purpose" car. It is perfectly comfortable on the street and relatively easy and cheap to maintain. In addition, it is beautifully set up for PCA track events. With the dual exhaust, chip, roll bar, Koni shocks, Camber Truss, Turbo brakes and suspension - it rockets around the track.

A technician at the local Porsche dealership recently drove the car and commented that it is by far the fastest and best handling '86 911 he has ever driven. Nuff said.

Why not just get a real Porsche Turbo?

According to noted Porsche writer Jim Schrager from the September 2006 Sports Car Market Magazine - "The rumors of turbo lag were not fiction, and if you drive a 4-speed Turbo (1976-1988) back-to-back with a good 5-speed 911SC (1978-1983), the normally aspirated SC will feel fast in all situations except foot-to-the-floor top-fuel-dragster acceleration runs. This made the Turbo a one-trick pony, well in contravention of the multi-purpose nature of most other 911's.

Vehicle Condition - Unlike other cars that I represent for other sellers, this is my personal car. I have owned it for about 3 years and have loved driving and owning it. If you appreciate the classic pre-1990 911 body style (as I do), then the wide body option is the only way to go. It offers all of the eye appeal of the turbo wide body along with turbo suspension and turbo brakes but with a normally aspirated 3.2 Liter engine. This car is very fast and it has great stopping power along with precision handling and is considerably cheaper to maintain as compared to a real turbo.

This car is in absolutely mint condition with super low fully documented mileage. I have full service records going back to 1992. The paint, interior, convertible top, engine compartment are all in excellent condition. With the performance modifications listed above, this car is a great track car or a great Sunday driver.

These rare Turbo Look cars are fast gaining the recognition that they deserve and have a growing following among Porsche fans. I believe that the value of these fine cars is on the rise.

Only notable defects include:

- minor wear on the drivers seat bolster

- minor wear on the dash behind the steering wheel

- a few minor dings on the drivers door
