1962 Austin Healey 3000 Mark II BT7 Roadster Tri Carb - Rare & Original

You are here   >  Cars & Motorcycles  >  Vehicle Auctions

The 1962 Austin Healey 3000 Mark II BT7 (4 seater) being offered today is quite rare. It is the only year that had factory installed triple carburetors as standard equipment and also is the last year of the true Roadster. These big Healeys have been steadily appreciating and are bringing nearly "E-Type" money. Check some of the big auction houses for proof. Color is red exterior with white leather interior with red piping. VIN # is HBT7L17642.

This remarkable survivor car has been owned by the same owner since 1966 and only has been driven approx. 3000 miles since then. It is believed that the tires are original to the car. The car has had one repaint over the years but the interior, engine even tires are original. It has only 43,000 original miles on the car. The gas tank and fuel system have been flushed and cleaned recently. Also, in December 2007, the owner replaced the water pump, changed the hoses and belts and serviced the radiator. According to Healey experts, it is one of the most handsome and desirable of the big Healeys produced, with the vertical grill, high performance engine, and the 2+2 roadster body.

Car has a new convertible top (but also includes the original convertible top), luggage rack, re-chromed bumpers, (not attached) - primarily needs interior work, sorting and re-paint. The re-chrome work was done at a cost of $3500.

The body is straight and solid, however there is a crack in the windshield. In addition, the car is currently not insured so any local interested parties or inspectors are welcome to view and start the car but due to insurance reasons, it is not able to be street driven. It is a great and classic car which needs some tinkering and sorting to be made into a reliable weekend driver. It would also be a great candidate for a complete restoration in order to elevate it to the next level or appreciate it in its original/survivor state. It is a very worthy candidate for either path.

A Brief History

The Austin Healey / British Motor Corporation built 5,095 model BT7 four-seaters, and 355 two-seaters in 1961 -1962. Power was 132 bhp at 4,750 rpm. The use of the three carburetors was for competition purposes, since regulations allowed a change in the size, but not the number fitted to the production model. This allowed the Austin Healey factory race cars to run three Weber carburetors. Donald Healey was the genius behind these special cars, and is well-known in automotive circles. With his son Geoffrey, their competition success was the result of rigorous preparation, and a dedicated team that set speed records in the 1950's and competed in the Mille Miglia, Le Mans 24- Hour and Sebring races in the 1960's.

What about Rust?

I have not personally seen the underside of the car. The seller reports that many Healey experts have inspected the underside and have reported it to be solid with only surface rust. He also reports that the quarter panels are solid. If you have any other concerns over rust - please inspect the car or have it professionally inspected.

This is an excellent survivor Healey that would make a great restoration project or just clean it up, sort it out and enjoy it on the weekends. Clearly it needs cosmetic work, tires etc. but it is a complete and rare Healey. The owner is requiring any buyer to inspect the car personally or have it professionally inspected prior to bidding or purchase. This will ensure complete satisfaction and no disappointments.

In Summary

The Tri-Carb Austin Healey BT7 2+2 Roadster is the most advanced of the Big Healey Roadsters and in fact is one of the rarest and most collectable. Produced for just over a year as an interem model, the low slung BT7 Roadster combines classic Healey roadster handling, road-hugging style and quick reactions with the power and responsiveness of the 3-carb engine which was used only in this model and it's 2 seat sibling.

Vehicle Condition - - I have personally inspected and photographed this vehicle. It is a very desireable survivor class Healey. It can be enjoyed as is after some mechanical sorting or it can benefit from a complete restoration in order to bring it up to the next level.

My inspection and photographing should not take the place of a personal inspection by any interested party or to hire a professional to look at the car. I am not a mechanic.

I invite and encourage any interested party to inspect this classic in Sugar Grove, Illinois and determine for yourself that this car is very nice original condition. Seeing is really believing.
