1957 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham #91 37k Miles Super Original ON AIR

You are here   >  Sold Inventory  >  Sold Vehicles
Someone once said to me: "A car can be restored 100 times, but it is original only once." Those words have never been more true than with this 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham (#91). VIN number 5770091032 considered "unaccounted for" by the Brougham Registry until it recently surfaced after many years in careful storage. It is in exceptional, original, unrestored condition and only has 37,XXX miles on it and guess what? - it's still riding on air. A survivor in the truest sense of the word.

It is perhaps the nicest and most original unrestored Brougham in existence and it's so refreshing to see one that is not painted black or white. The Blue Broughams have become very desirable of late.

* Paint 124 - Copenhagen Blue - 1 of 24 delivered in 1957 in this color.
* Trim 2521 - Medium blue leather throughout - 1 of 6 delivered in that trim combination in 1957 with original Karakul carpeting.

The history of this car is both complete and fascinating. The car was just purchased from the second owner's grandson. His family has owned the car since 1958. The history of this vehicle as told in his words is as follows:
History - The car was purchased in 1958 by my Grandfather and has been in the family since. It was delivered at a Cadillac dealership in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and has been there forever until moving to Illinois in 2004. It has been garaged for the entire time.

From what family members say and then confirmed in the insurance papers, the price paid was $15,000. My grandfather loved the car and only used it on special occasions and to go to church. Mr. Hicks chauffeured the car when my Grandmother went to Atlantic city for a number of years as a summer escape (pre casinos). My mother once drove the car by herself for a weekend trip to New York City.

It carried my mother and her new husband from their wedding reception to the Honeymoon car parked outside of town. It also carried my grandfather's widow Rhoda and family to the funeral in 1965. After his death the car became the property of his wife, Rhoda . She used it on occasion. As a child, I remember being driven to the pool in the Brougham as well as to a drive-in movie. My friend and I played with the electric windows and ran the battery down so that the car had to be jumped to get home.

The rising of the car when it started was a very memorable event. The car's ownership came into my hands upon my grandmother's death in 1985. I did not live in the area however, and the vehicle stayed in the garage of the same house that my mother then inherited.

Mr. Hicks was the gentleman who would take care of the car and changed it's oil, gave it a great coat of wax and started it regularly. He did this until his death in 1998 at the age of 97.
Obviously, this is a well cared for vehicle and it has been elevated to a beloved member of the family. It has created countless memories that only a special car can provide.

** And now the details of this great car: **

EXTERIOR - The original lacquer paint is shining brightly. It has some minor chips and scratches but overall, it is a joy to behold. A beautiful shade of blue indeed. 50 years of careful storage and wax applications have protected the original finish. You must see it for yourself.

Stainless steel roof is in excellent condition with no dents whatsoever. Overall condition of the glass is excellent with no cracks or discoloration. Original chrome bumpers are in very good condition (never replated) with no cracks present. Please refer to the pictures for a better view.

Car is riding on brand new Coker radial tires. Car has original Turbine wheels with correct center caps. In fact, the wheels have shined up beautifully after all of these years. Often these wheels show signs of separation and corrosion but these have been beautifully preserved.

INTERIOR - Original, unrestored and correct. Code 252 is light blue leather throughout. The drivers side seat which had shown cracking and separation of the seams has been replaced with new color dyed leather at a cost to the owner of $3500. Absolutely gorgeous!!

Overall leather condition including front and rear door trim panels is excellent.
All chrome in the interior is in excellent condition and needs nothing. Polarized sunvisors are unmarked and uncracked. Original Karakul carpeting is in very nice shape.
SUSPENSION - incredible but true - the air suspension is working perfectly. The car airs up and stays up for at least 3-4 days before starting to sink a bit. We've never seen a Brougham air suspension work this well.

UNDERSIDE - very solid underneath. Very light surface rust present which is not unusual. All floorpans and sheet metal are very solid with no rust-throughs whatsoever.
ENGINE - Car has not run since 1998. The following steps have been taken to get the car running again:
- new battery was installed (once installed, all lights shone brightly),
- all spark plugs were pulled and each cylinder was lubricated,
- new plugs were installed,
- new distributor cap, points and wires were installed,
- both 4 barrel carburators were removed and rebuilt with carburator rebuild kits,
- fuel tank was cleaned out and fuel lines blown out, as a result, car fired up quickly,
- runs and drives a bit rough at the moment. Likely needs some additional attention (tune up) to run perfectly.
Currently the car has the original and correct dual quad setup. Air cleaner assembly is in great shape. Engine bay (see pictures) is in incredible cosmetic condition.
BRAKES - working fine
POWER OPTIONS - power trunk works fine (one buttons opens, one button closes). Also note that the trunk lid opens and closes using the key as it should. All power windows and auto start work fine. Power seats work sporadically and have "woken up" recently as have many other power features. All blower motors work (defrost and air conditioning). AC works OK but could use a re-charge. Rear floor heaters are fully intact. Horn, clock and turn signals all work fine. Power antenna works when the radio is turned on. Incredible.
TRUNK - complete and in incredible condition. 2 wooden wheel blocks are present along with full jack assembly (jack, handle and base), original spare (believed to be original) and cover. Some discoloration on the trunk carpeting but that is normal.
VANITIES - original magnetic tumblers are present along with original cigarette case. In addition, period correct but not original perfume bottle, Evans compact and pencil are included.
NEEDS (every Brougham has them - some more than others)

- tinkering with the power seat to get it to work full time.

- likely tune up is needed to get the car to run up to it's potential.

The Cadillac Eldorado Brougham is a beautiful example of the height of automotive luxury in the late 1950's. These cars sold for a staggering $13,000 and were produced at a considerable loss for Cadillac. One could have purchased a Rolls Royce at the time for $9000. The Eldorado Broughams were chock full of style and innovation. You too can join the ranks of movie stars, wealthy industrialists, and a gangster or two. Bob Hope, John Wayne, Frank Sinatra, Aristotle Onasis, are supposedly but a few of the original Brougham owners.

This is truly an opportunity for a discerning collector to acquire a car that will always be a significant part of motoring history of the '50s.
