1969 Custom Karmann Ghia with Porsche 944 Motor
I am pleased to offer this very unique, one of a kind, custom 1969 Karmann Ghia. This special car was built by it's very talented owner and features a motor from a 1986 Porsche 944. Now that's taking a good car and making it infinitely better. VIN # is 149041000. Car was completed in 2009. Car has less than 1000 miles since it was built, drivetrain has 108,000 miles with new timing belt.
The Ghia was acquired in Arizona and was rust free. It had no dash, windshields, seats, motor or transaxle.....perfect for what I had in mind. I dropped the pan and bought a donor car, 1986 Porsche 944.
After cutting out front and rear bulkheads, I now had a body only which was mocked up to driving height. New motor and transaxle were set inside. 2x2 1/4 wall tubing was fabricated to connect to body as necessary. Front suspension was from a Toyota truck because of the disc brakes, brake cylinder size, rack and pinion and width. Wheel adapters put the stance equal front and rear. Inside wheel wells in front were cut out to accomodate bigger wheels and lower stance. Rear fender wells were cut, radiussed and flared. A trunk was fashioned. Stock VW gas tank was used and mounts from the inside ( remove a 2 piece step arrangement behind seat and it is there as is the top of the transaxle.)
The floor from the donor car was cut out and put in the Ghia because I could then use 944 seats, and console. 944 dash was a must as I wanted the engine to talk to the dash just as it did in the Porsche. This was the biggest challenge as the manuals available were all in German and the abbreviations were as well. Took weeks to trace out what I needed and eliminate the rest. Everything turned out great.
Steering was from a Ford Maverick. Oil pan is modified to allow necessary room for the rack. Paint is 3 stage House of Colors. Upholstery is ultra vinyl. Also features radio/CD player, electric wipers and power antenna. The rear side windows are removable and ride behind the seats. Install is done in seconds. Hood is reversed and has a neat little ram air type scoop at rear. Rear wing and front are fiberglass pieces.
Engine has 107,000 miles. I pulled heads, oil pan and inspected prior to install. Can hardly see any wear which I guess is expected from German technology. All brake components were rebuilt.
This car is a fun get up and go ride. It weighs 2500 lbs. I have driven on Los Angeles freeways at sustained speeds of 85 mph which is what folks out here want to drive. I have been on a short slalam coarse twice, enough to realize I did not have sticky tires which would have made a big difference. Also lower gears would be fun for the street, afterall the current set up is for 150 mph driving on the Autoban. I would drive this car anywhere any time. It is an obvious head turner, especially when you stop and pop the hood.
