More Good Information

From Walter M. P. McCall's 80 Years of Cadillac La Salle :
"The practical 1939 LaSalle Two-Door Touring Sedan was a slow seller this year. Only 977 Series 39-50 Two-doors, Model 5011 were sold, compared with sales of more than 15,000 four-door sedans and 2,500 coupes. Included were 23 Two-Door Touring Sedans with the new "Sunshine Roof" option, Model 5011-A. The five-passenger Two-door Touring Sedan weighed 3,710 pounds and sold for $1,280.00. The rocker molding treatment (running boards were now optional) was similar to that used on the style-setting Cadillac Sixty-Special." The rocker molding comment might lead you to believe that the 39-5011 was the only '39 La Salle with that treatment, but actually all '39 La Salles without running boards were trimmed the same way. All '39 La Salles used the monobloc 322 cubic inch 125 horsepower L-head V-8 engine with hydraulic lifters which is a smaller-bore version of the 135 horsepower (later 150 horsepower) Cadillac 346 V-8. Here are some other comments on the 39-50's in Mr. Mc Call's book: "The La Salle had a cleaner, more stremlined appearance this year. Greatly increased (by 27 percent) glass area made these cars look lighter and airier--especially the closed models. Note the finely-detailed die-cast ventilator panel at the rear of the hood. Side-mounded spare tires were available, but these cars looked better without them. Like its more expensive cousin, the Cadillac, the 1939 La Salle got a nose job this year. La Salle's new front-end included a tall, very narrow grille not unlike the one on the milestone 1934 La Salle and a series of fine vertical grille bars in the "catwalk" area between the grille and front fenders. Big, conical headlights with horizontal trim on the side were mounted higher up on the hood side panels."
